My wife and I took a birding trip about two years ago into the Tensaw Delta. The guide pointed out the high power electricity towers covered with hundreds of cormorants. Their feces had turned the towers and the islands which the towers sat a milky white. The smell was detectable from miles away. Since that time, I have noticed the large numbers of cormorants in Mobile Bay and the various rivers feeding into Mobile Bay.

I watched four cormorants fishing on the Bon Secour River. They could dive down for several minutes and surface 200 yards down the river. I can't see how such a ravenous bird can not hurt the fishery. Now imagine multiplying the effect of one bird by tens of thousands.

I have a question. I have been visiting the Mobile and the Alabama coastline since the early sixties. I don't remember seeing a cormorant until two years ago. Can anyone tell me about existence of cormorants around the Mobile area?
